Christmas in New Mexico

Christmas in New Mexico is truly a feast for the eyes and senses. With the distinct smell of pinon wafting through the air from classic adobe Kiva fireplaces to snowy hills, crisp weather, invigorating air, and wide-open turquois skies - it is known as The Land of Enchantment.  New Mexico invites magic and mystery to traditional feasts, celebrations, processions, and dances. Christmas is a unique blend or Spanish, Native American, and Old West traditions with many modern-day enhancements and comforts.

Light is especially festive this time of year with Farolitos (little lanterns) and Luminarias (small bon fires) lining streets, buildings, and historic sights. As the darkest time of the year approaches-the evening sky carries a mystical quality with a thin veil between heaven and earth. Inside homes, restaurants, galleries, and shops there are twinkling lights and fires aglow captivating this special season. The warmth of the season awakens the tender soul.

Participate in a candle-lit procession of Las Posadas- a re-enactment of the birth of the Christ-child hosted by local churches. Experience dances at Indian Pueblos that are a cultural treat, held on special feast days of saints that are deeply spiritual and passed down through generations of Pueblo people, blending Native traditions and Catholicism. Enjoy a world-class holiday concert of Christmas Carols and Lullabies by the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, sang at the beautiful and stunning St. Francis Cathedral in the heart of Santa Fe.

With exquisite holiday décor, fabulous local food, timeless traditions, and friendly folks—northern New Mexico at Christmastime will be an unforgettable journey, with lifetime memories, experiences, and a place to return to again and again. The breathtaking visual and sensory delights make New Mexico one of America’s great winter holiday destinations.

Feliz Navidad!
